2nd dan black belt

I took up kickboxing over 12 years ago following a brutal attack which landed me in hospital – I decided there and then that that was never going to happen again.

I trained at Newcastle’s Advanced Fighting Centre under John Atkin who is truly an exceptional coach. Gradings happened fast and 3 years later I found myself with a black belt following a gruelling 2 hour exam.

Teaching started quickly afterwards helping out in class and coaching at the University, I loved it!

Just For Kicks Martial arts was born in 2007 after spotting gap in the market for women’s only classes, I trained for years, predominately with men and knew how intimidating it could be. Just For Kicks was set up as a safe, friendly environment for women to train, grade and get fit whilst having a bit of a giggle along the way.

Over the years I have travelled to Thailand on numerous occasions for weeks at a time to live and train on Thai boxing camps all over the country (see photos in the photos section) and continued to train under John until I relocated to York in 2011.

In 2010 I was awarded a 2nd dan black belt which I am immensely proud of.

I love kickboxing for many reasons, it keeps me fit – like really fit, is great for stress relief after a busy day and has truly made me some wonderful friends over the years.

When I am not teaching my day job is spent working as Territory Marketing Manager for the North of England at English Heritage. I train a couple of times a week at Legions Thai boxing gym, try to practice Yoga daily and hit the gym twice a week.

In addition I hold the following qualifications:

  • Gym instructors level 2
  • British weight lifting certificate level 2
  • Personal training certificate level 3
  • Diet & nutrition diploma level 3
  • Boxercise Instructor
  • Certificate in Children and exercise
  • Strength and Conditioning
